Climate Change Adaption for East Manggarai Coffee Farmers

In East Manggarai, Indonesia, coffee farmers grapple with the effects of climate change, which disrupt traditional processing practices like sun-drying beans due to erratic weather patterns.

Asnikom, a local coffee farmers’ association, partnered with Rikolto and CV Ontosoroh to address these challenges. Together, they implemented inclusive business models with This Side Up (TSU), Asnikom’s primary buyer, to distribute climate change risks more fairly along the coffee value chain. Initiatives in 2023 included constructing drying facilities across five villages, enhancing quality control through cupping assessments, and adopting anaerobic methods for post-harvest processing, all aimed at preserving and improving coffee quality despite climate-related adversities.
