In 2021, Rikolto and Sucafina, one of the world’s largest specialty coffee traders, collaborated on the implementation of a Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) project for one of Sucafina’s producer partners and Rikolto’s program partner, Koperasi Koerintji Barokah Bersama (KKBB). Koperasi Koerintji Barokah Bersama is a coffee sales cooperative consisting of 13 processing units and 381 farmer members spanning three districts: Kayu Aro, Kayu Aro Barat, and Gunung Tujuh in Kerinci Regency, Jambi Province. This partnership drives one of Rikolto’s goals to promote inclusive business systems between farmer organizations and buyers.
In 2021 and 2022, the PES project focused on agroforestry programs, specifically planting avocado seedlings as shade trees for coffee, which can generate additional income for farmers.
In 2023, this PES project shifted its focus from interventions in the field to interventions aimed at reducing pollution and carbon emissions in post-harvest processes, with post-harvest coffee waste management turning into compost fertilizer.
