Capturing inspiring stories is my passion as a videographer, recently my team and I visited SD Negeri 7 Dauh Puri to document their healthy canteen cadres and garden cadre initiatives. These programmes engage students in activities that promote healthy eating habits and environmental sustainability.
That morning we met Anita, a representative of the SIDAPRI Healthy Canteen Cadre. Anita shared about her passion for entrepreneurship, cooking and selling food. She explained about the SEMAYUR (Tuesday Eat Vegetable) and JUMABU (Friday Eat Fruit) programmes that educate her friends about the importance of vegetable and fruit consumption. “We learn together about healthy food because healthy food is very important for growth and maintaining body stamina,” she said.
Anita also emphasised the use of tumblers and food containers to reduce plastic waste.
Through my camera, I captured the bustle in the canteen as students prepared and sold healthy snacks in each scene with enthusiasm and co-operation.
After that, We met Citra, a representative of the SIDAPRI Garden Cadre. Every Saturday, Citra and her friends gather to do gardening, from planting, tending, to harvesting vegetables. Their harvest is used by the Canteen Cadre to make healthy food and also distributed to teachers, students, and parents.
“We also educate our friends and classmates about the importance of gardening so that they know the importance of learning and taking care of the environment and plants around us,” she said. Their greenhouses are filled with lush plants, demonstrating the students’ dedication to sustainability practices.
In a conversation with the principal, we learnt about the long-term vision of this initiative. The principal emphasised the importance of providing healthy food in the canteen to establish healthy eating habits early on, which will continue into adulthood and reduce the risk of diseases related to poor diet. He also stated that healthy food helps improve students’ concentration and focus at school.
The school committee showed their full support for the healthy canteen programme, ensuring that the food served meets health standards.
Ibu Chess from the Bali Environmental Education Centre (PPLH) explained the challenges of unhealthy food consumption among children, resulting in problems such as diabetes, obesity and stunting. PPLH research shows that 75% of children do not like vegetables, which results in a lack of intake of essential nutrients. Therefore, PPLH supports this programme through socialisation, education and training of healthy food cadres who spread the word to their friends and younger siblings.
After visiting SD Negeri 7 Dauh Puri, we were amazed by the dedication of the students, teachers and supporting organisations. The healthy canteen cadre and garden initiatives cadre are not just programmes, but movements that are shaping a healthier and more sustainable future. Through the stories of Anita, Citra and others, we witnessed the profound impact of education and community engagement. The students are leading by example, proving that with passion and dedication, they can bring about great change in their communities and beyond.
